THE GOBLIN EMPEROR x THE KING’S SPEECH

As the king’s illegitimate son, Sir Beoden Altaryn accepted long ago that he’ll never be anyone special. In fact, he prefers it that way. He’s content to serve as a royal guard and provide a comfortable life for his family, even if it means he’ll never be allowed to call the man he is sworn to protect “father.”

But when the king dies in battle, he leaves a proclamation claiming Beoden as his son—and naming him heir to the throne. As Beoden grapples with the overwhelming responsibility of leading a kingdom, the king’s nephew, Jak Bouchard, offers him a way out: if Beoden lets Jak have the crown instead, Jak will send Beoden and his family to a new home in a neighboring kingdom. However, when Beoden learns that Jak caused the death of Reul’s daughter years ago, he is convinced that Jak will not rest until all other branches of the royal family are destroyed. Relying on the power of the crown to protect his family, Beoden rejects the deal and remains king.

Jak will not give up his birthright so easily. While a drought ravages the kingdom, he finds apparent evidence that Beoden is an imposter and blames him for the kingdom’s suffering. Though Beoden denies the claims and defends himself with the truth, calls for his abdication only increase. He shifts his strategy to silencing Jak by any means necessary. When a reckless decision takes an innocent life, he realizes that protecting his family may mean destroying the man he once was.
